Moral Police and our own Immoral values

A teenage girl came out of a pub in guwahati and men in the locality decided to show their 'mardanagi'. And as always social media and tv hotshots are making all the hue and cry. Allegations against these barbaric men , inept police force, home minister of the state, pub owner, social stigmas and what not. The question is 'Will all of this bring an end to further barbaric acts in the society?'. The answer is a big NO. As long as the speeches of women empowerment and police enforcement dialogues are shoved through your throats. Its not gonna happen. The need of the hour and always has been is stricter punishment. I read in a social forum where some one suggested  'male genital removal' as the punishment for it. How gruesome it may sound, there ought to be a benchmark punishment for such activities. Obviously there is a question of false intent and improper\false cases. But false case or not women folks should have a level playing field before they tackle these issues. If there was a 15 year prison term for rape cases, the dynamics of law changes altogether. Its like walking on a rope, If you are asked to walk on a rope which is 10 inches above the ground you dont have the fear of falling down. Do you?? Think about the same rope walk at 10 feet above ground. Will you still give it a try?? I bet you not. That is what I mean by setting the benchmark. Charge these 20 men mob with criminal cases, and hell yeah the reporter\cameraman too.

Before guwahati happened , people in my beautiful state of Kerala are pounded with rape\adultery cases almost every 2 months. And so is the case with every other city and state in our country. Statistics may throw us blind saying certain cities are safe, but truly speaking every mother & father spel their chociest prayers if their girl turns out late to home one night. A major part of our society blame the women whenever such a discussion pops up. Staying late & hanging out with friends, partying, drinking, wearing those skimpy clothes is in a way the root cause of all this. Much to her chagrin many of the bold girls in my life are believing (or starting to believe) this foolish principle. In my view a girl child in our society is raped or molested the first time when we confine them in our closed rooms and narrow minds to protect her from the bad bad world outside. Its the outside world that needs to be cured before you push your sweety into the darkness. YES its practically impossible of you too cleanse the dirt inside society in one day. But it could start with your house beginning with your son. Every mother & father spend half their lifetimes worrying about their daughter. If half of it could be spend on teaching your son the humane way of respecting life and treating the fairer sex the fair way, that my friend is a good head start. I always was amused that the corrective measures that we expect in a society very rarely happens in our own backyard. Its not a quick fix solution and life is not gonna be rosy and fair ahead, but its worth a try. And switch off those channel which keep repeating the same video and same 'Mahila Bachao-waalas', I can bet my life its not going anywhere  when big corporates stop funding them. Its your girl make your own moves to save them, dont wait on the any god send messiah to save everyone.

Good topic. I think time will unfold the real cause for the incident in Guwahati. I happens every where I guess. For eg I noticed an ex boss of mine was a woman and she had a whole crew of women ruling the roost and we felt the same - discriminated by a bunch of women. Sure women feel the same in many more places. It's just the rule of a majority. Some times its men vs women, white vs black, fairer vs darker, older vs younger, etc...the outcomes are different - some very heinous like the one that happened in Guwahati and should be punished. I am sure the young lady had every right to be in the pub and get pretty high, but at least she should have carried a gun or mace spray and plan for the worst....

PUNISHMENT should serve the purpose ..... it is not there to correct one who has done it, nor is it a penance for anything already committed .... it is to deter those who intend to go the wrong way ..... from choosing it ...

Fear that justice will get you and punish you should be enough to get most of the lot to proper side of the line .....

But when was the last time you heard a real criminal getting punished they way they should be in India ?? Politicians rape the country, law enforcement watches the rape with relish, the judiciary gives a standing ovation and last but not the least WE THE PEOPLE CRIB about it on blogs and never do a thing.....

When was the last time a court in India gave a judgement on time on anything of value ..... when was the last time the Police of this country did a proper and truthful investigation on anything ???

There are criminal charges on every top Indian leader right from the President.

Let the guilty's spine shiver at the thought of punishment that awaits him ... and there will be no more crime ...

Timely post, Do feel happy to see someone concerned enough to raise his voice against these atrocities, thank you so much. But i beg to differ, regarding your comment about the punishment part.
Punishment, as you said, may deter a very few from committing such crimes. The flip side is in how many cases of rape and sexual abuse get reported. For every case being reported, there are 100s of women who gets sidelined by the societal attitude towards victims of sexual abuse. And even in those cases in which the women somehow gathered enough courage to report and file a case, how many of the culprits get to pay even the meager penalties prescribed by the current legal system? If we look at the statistics, those who gets booked for rape manages to slip through the gaps and attitudes of our legal system and the conviction rates falls well below a pathetic 25%.So you see, treating the manifestations won't take us anywhere, its the root causes that needs to be addressed,-social status of our women.

Love to hear what you think!
